Job description

Within Ghent University you will have the opportunity to strengthen a dynamic team of interdisciplinary researchers as doctor assistant, where you will be part of the Industrial Design team and the imec research group for Media, Innovation and Communication Technologies (imec-mict-UGent). Within this team you are responsible for the research roadmap on computation design. This includes discussing research strategy with ZAP (professors), project acquisition/coordination and guidance of junior researchers.

  • At least 70% of your assignment will be spent on academic research.
  • You will assist in teaching activities at the Bachelor’s or Master’s level with focus on emerging technologies and advanced CAD.
  • You will counsel Master’s students in their exercises, work placement and Master’s dissertation.
  • You will counsel doctoral students.
  • You come into contact with new emerging technologies (e.g. IoT, AI, VR/AR, Industry 4.0, Smart Products,..)
  • You (co-)manage national and international research projects
  • You will co-work in the heart of Ghent at 'De Krook', a place where knowledge, creativity and entrepreneurship are central AND in the ‘Industrial Design Center’ in Kortrijk.

Function profile

  • You are able to independently follow up a research project and adjust it in consultation.
  • You already have background knowledge and/or experience in the field of computational design / data-driven design.
  • You have interest and/or experience in research on new models / methods:

- Linking (users) data with (CAD) design and production

- Linking data interpretation with use of ‘smart’ products

  • You are familiar with tools like Arduino, Processing, Unity, Grasshopper, TensorFlow,…
  • You have good writing and presentation skills in both Dutch and English.
  • You are communicative and can work well in a team, but at the same time you show a high degree of creativity, independence and a sense of initiative.
  • You have a critical attitude and always looking for challenges and how they can be improved.
  • You can deal with deadlines and have a great deal of flexibility for changes within the research process.
  • You are able to combine and validate academic and practical knowledge.
