Entirely in the style of the 'Allerslimste Mens' (popular television show at this moment, ed.), we present the institutional review … in four key words:

1. Site visits

In October and December, Ghent University will host the next institutional review, the six-yearly evaluation of our education policy and quality assurance system by the independent quality assurance organisation NVAO. To this end, an internationally constituted committee will make two site visits:

• A first, exploratory site visit is planned on 11 October 2022, during which the committee would like to get to know our institution in depth.
• An in-depth site visit will then follow from 12 to 14 December 2022, during which the committee will examine the implementation of our education policy and quality assurance.

2. Critical Reflection

In preparation for the institutional review, Ghent University submitted a report to the NVAO: the Critical Reflection on our education policy. The Critical Reflection provides insight into the educational vision, the educational policy and the organisational structure of Ghent University and the way in which policy is implemented, evaluated and adjusted in order to achieve the set goals within the social context and challenges.

It also explains the Quality Conduct that was developed to guarantee the quality of the study programmes, including the way internal and external stakeholders, peers and experts are involved, and how public information about the (quality of the) study programmes is shaped.

3. Educational objectives

Ghent University's educational policy is based on the educational vision, which in turn is founded on six strategic educational objectives: think broadly, keep researching, cultivate talent, contribute, extend horizons and opt for quality.

The six strategic objectives - together with the decree requirements - are translated into the operational objectives that apply to each programme.

4. Monitors

Each of our programmes checks in its education monitor, on the basis of quantitative data (UGI) and qualitative information, to what extent it achieves the educational objectives, how it translates the educational objectives and how it addresses the points of concern together with the programme committee.

In this way, the monitor acts as a kind of dashboard for education policy, allowing us to detect strengths and areas of concern in the field of education.
